Big Feelings & Strong Personalities

When Everything Becomes a Battle

Some children feel things intensely and react quickly. You may be seeing meltdowns, arguing, refusal, power struggles, or big reactions to “small” situations—often alongside anxiety, ADHD traits, sensory needs, or difficulty with flexibility.

COMMON STRUGGLES:

  • Frequent meltdowns, yelling, or aggressive moments

  • Defiance/refusal, arguing, power struggles

  • Difficulty with limits, transitions, or “no”

  • Sensitivity to fairness, control, or change

  • Big reactions at home (sometimes “fine” at school)

  • Difficulties with bedtime, dinner, homework etc.

How Therapy Can Help:

We focus on emotion regulation first—because behaviour is often a stress signal. Therapy may include:

  • Helping your child recognize early warning signs

  • Calming tools + recovery plans

  • Flexible thinking and problem-solving

  • Building frustration tolerance and coping skills

  • Parent coaching: consistent boundaries, less escalation, more connection

Parent’s Role In Therapy:

Parents are included to learn strategies that reduce power struggles and help your child feel safe while still holding limits. Support focuses on helping children build regulation skills while helping parents respond in ways that reduce escalation and increase connection.

PARENTS OFTEN REACH OUT WHEN THEIR CHILD:

  • Daily routines become constant battle

  • Small frustrations lead to big emotional reactions

  • Struggles with limits or transitions

  • You feel stuck in power struggles

  • Seems overwhelmed by emotions

  • Family life feels increasingly stressful
